In his recent non-fiction book De bananengeneratie (The Banana Generation), author and programme-maker Pete Wu discusses the double lives of people of Chinese descent in the Netherlands today. Based on personal experience and illustrated by striking anecdotes, Wu describes the struggles of this second generation of Dutch Chinese. Where do they clash with their parents? When he started online dating, Wu was confronted by all kinds of stereotypes common in Dutch society about Asian men – right up to a brutal 'No Asians' in a profile text. In this lecture, Wu discusses this stereotyping in greater detail, on the basis of his own experiences and using examples from several films. In collaboration with CinemAsia.
